Certified Nurse Midwife (CNM)
Position Summary
The Certified Nurse Midwife (CNM) provides comprehensive women's healthcare with an emphasis on prenatal, intrapartum, postpartum, newborn, and gynecologic services in both outpatient clinic and inpatient hospital settings. The CNM practices within the full scope of nurse-midwifery under applicable state laws and organizational policies while collaborating with Obstetrician/Gynecologists, Advanced Practice Providers, nursing staff, behavioral health providers, and other members of the healthcare team.
The CNM is committed to providing evidence-based, patient-centered care that promotes healthy pregnancies, positive birth experiences, preventive women's healthcare, and improved health outcomes for rural and underserved populations.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Clinical Responsibilities
- Provide comprehensive prenatal care, including routine and high-risk pregnancy management in collaboration with the supervising/collaborating physician.
- Provide labor management and attend vaginal deliveries in the inpatient hospital setting.
- Manage postpartum care for mothers and provide initial newborn assessment within the scope of practice.
- Provide comprehensive gynecologic care including:
- Annual well-woman examinations
- Family planning and contraceptive counseling
- Preconception counseling
- Menopause management
- Diagnosis and treatment of common gynecologic conditions
- Sexually transmitted infection screening, diagnosis, and treatment
- Perform office procedures including but not limited to:
- IUD insertion and removal
- Nexplanon insertion and removal
- Endometrial biopsy (if privileged)
- Colposcopy (if privileged)
- Cervical cancer screening
- Fetal non-stress testing
- Limited obstetrical ultrasound, if credentialed
- Order, interpret, and manage laboratory, diagnostic, and imaging studies.
- Develop and implement individualized treatment plans.
- Recognize complications requiring consultation, collaboration, co-management, or referral to an Obstetrician/Gynecologist or other specialists.
- Participate in rotating call schedules, including nights, weekends, and holidays as assigned.
- Respond to obstetrical emergencies and collaborate with hospital staff to provide timely, high-quality patient care.
Patient Care Responsibilities

- Educate patients and families regarding pregnancy, childbirth, breastfeeding, newborn care, reproductive health, nutrition, and preventive healthcare.
- Promote continuity of care through coordinated prenatal, delivery, postpartum, and well-woman services.
- Maintain complete, accurate, and timely documentation within the electronic health record.
- Participate in care coordination, patient navigation, and population health initiatives.
Quality Improvement and Compliance
- Participate in quality improvement initiatives and clinical performance activities.
- Adhere to evidence-based clinical guidelines and standards established by ACNM, ACOG, HRSA, CMS, and applicable regulatory agencies.
- Comply with all federal, state, organizational, hospital, and credentialing requirements.
- Participate in peer review, credentialing, privileging, and continuing professional development.
- Support organizational quality metrics related to prenatal care, postpartum care, maternal outcomes, newborn outcomes, preventive screenings, and patient satisfaction.
Team Collaboration
- Collaborate closely with Obstetrician/Gynecologists, family physicians, advanced practice providers, nurses, behavioral health providers, pharmacists, social workers, lactation consultants, and hospital personnel.
- Serve as a clinical resource for nursing staff and other healthcare professionals.
- Participate in interdisciplinary care conferences, departmental meetings, and organizational committees.
- Support clinical education for students, residents, and other learners as appropriate.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- Thorough knowledge of evidence-based obstetric, gynecologic, and newborn care.
- Excellent assessment, diagnostic, and clinical decision-making skills.
- Ability to independently manage low-risk pregnancies while recognizing conditions requiring physician consultation or referral.
- Strong communication and patient education skills.
- Ability to work collaboratively within an interdisciplinary healthcare team.
- Commitment to providing culturally competent, trauma-informed, and patient-centered care.
- Understanding of quality improvement initiatives, value-based care, and rural healthcare delivery.
Physical Requirements
- Ability to stand, walk, bend, lift, and move throughout outpatient clinics and hospital labor and delivery units.
- Ability to respond rapidly to obstetrical emergencies.
- Manual dexterity sufficient to perform obstetrical and gynecologic procedures.
- Ability to lift and position patients and equipment as necessary.
Work Environment
This position provides care in both outpatient clinic settings and inpatient hospital labor and delivery units. Responsibilities include scheduled clinic appointments, labor management, deliveries, hospital rounds, and rotating call coverage, including evenings, weekends, and holidays.
