About NHSC Loan Repayment Program

The NHSC Loan Repayment Program provides up to $75,000 (full-time) or $37,500 (half-time) for a 2-year commitment at an NHSC-approved site in a Health Professional Shortage Area (HPSA). Awards are paid directly to your loan servicer and are exempt from federal income tax.

Award amounts are set by commitment type and discipline — not HPSA score. HPSA score affects funding likelihood: sites scoring 14+ have historically been the most funded. You can continue for additional years with up to $35,000 per year.
