Where to Find Nurse Practitioner Jobs at Critical Access Hospitals
Critical access hospitals are small rural hospitals, capped at 25 beds, that hire one or two clinicians at a time. Their openings rarely reach the big job boards. Here is where they are posted, and what the work is like.

Where these jobs are posted
- The hospital’s own careers page. Nearly always first, and sometimes only. Pick the counties you would move to and check those hospitals directly.
- 3RNet. A national rural recruitment network with a recruiter for each state who knows which rural sites are hiring before the posting goes up.
- Your state office of rural health. Every state has one, and many keep a vacancy list for rural hospitals and clinics.
- HRSA Health Workforce Connector. Useful for checking whether a rural site takes part in a federal loan repayment program.
What to ask before you take one
- How many clinicians cover the schedule, and what happens when one is out.
- Whether the role is clinic only, or clinic plus inpatient or emergency coverage.
- Call frequency, and whether call is paid separately.
- Which specialists you can reach, and how far the nearest referral center is.
- Whether the attached clinic is a separately approved loan repayment site.
If rural is what you want
Community health centers serve many of the same rural counties, often within a few miles of a critical access hospital, and they are the sites most likely to qualify for loan repayment. If the goal is rural practice rather than hospital practice specifically, those jobs are worth looking at side by side.

- It depends on the site, not on your job title. National Health Service Corps awards attach to approved sites, and many approved sites are outpatient clinics rather than hospitals. Check the specific site on the federal site list before assuming an award applies, and ask the employer whether the clinic and the hospital are separate sites.

- Broader scope and less backup. A rural hospital NP often covers clinic and inpatient or emergency duties in the same week, and specialists are a long drive away. Health center work is outpatient primary care with a bigger team on site. Pay is usually similar; call is usually not.
