POSITION SUMMARY:
Provides behavioral health and substance use treatment to patients within the Coastal Horizons Center clinic, under the direction of a supervising psychiatrist and medical director. Physician’s Assistant provides diagnosis, treatment, medication management, consultation, and follow up behavioral health and substance use care to agency patients. The Physician’s Assistant provides age and specialty appropriate care at the level of training achieved.
POSITION HIGHLIGHTS:
- Responsible for providing psychiatric services to patients in a variety of clinical settings during scheduled hours.
- Responsible for treating adults, adolescents, and children experiencing symptoms of behavioral health and substance use disorders.
- Provides assessment, diagnosis, and treatment plans in accordance with all federal and state statutes, regulations and protocols regulating the profession.
- Prescribe, recommend, and/or discontinue medications and treatments to treat mental, emotional, behavioral and substance use disorders in accordance with all state and federal regulations as well as the Collaborative Practice Agreement.
- Provides medication management for patients on medication and intermittent reassessment (as needed) for those assessed (but not on medication). Medication provision could include the direct delivery of injectables.
- Counsel patients during appointments on medication benefits and risks.
- Order, interpret, and evaluate labs to identify and assess patient's clinical problems and health care needs. Records findings, and formulates plan and prognosis, based on patient's condition.
- Participates in the initial assessment, prescreening and evaluation of preadmission for patients entering Opioid Treatment Program (OTP) or Outpatient-Based Opioid Treatment (OBOT) Program.
- Respond to client emergencies and be accessible to crisis on-call clinicians when appropriate.
- Collaborates with Medical Director, supervising psychiatrist, nursing staff, medical assistants, therapist, and other treatment team members to ensure patient needs are met.
- Responsible for timely and accurate completion of medical records documentation, including assessment, treatment plan, progress notes, outcome measures, and billing entries.
- May refer patients to other medical providers for consultation or specialized care for treatment.
- Collaborate with guardians, relatives, and significant others on patient’s conditions and treatment when clinically appropriate.
- Return calls and emails promptly (within 24 hours of receipt or sooner if clinically necessary)
- Responsible for making independent decisions based on protocols developed utilizing national guidelines and standards of care for treatment interventions.
- Actively participate in all agency and department education, training, and in-services to confirm.

- Experience in delivering high-quality, patient-centered care.
- Knowledge of laws, regulations, and policies which govern the program.

- Skill in establishing rapport with a client and/or family and applying techniques of assessing psycho-social, behavioral, and psychological aspects of the client.

Provide professional assistance working with the psychiatric, substance use, and integrated care needs of those individuals who are seeking medication management services at Coastal Horizons. Medical Assistant will support and collaborate with psychiatric treatment providers including but not limited to MD’s, PA’s, PMHNP’s and other outpatient treatment professionals.
POSITION HIGHLIGHTS:
- Responsible for providing medical assistance to individuals served within the outpatient treatment setting.
- Requires interviewing patients and/or significant others to acquire medical history, psychiatric history and health assessment, providing appropriate care either through intervention or referral.
- Manages medical records for patients who receive services.
- Required to provide patient assessments to determine the most appropriate action for intervention, which may range from referral to the program physician to providing treatment, within the limits of her/his certifications, via standing order.
- Assists patients in applying for and navigating patient assistance programs.
- Manages medication samples and schedules pharmaceutical representative’s presentations.
- Provide education patients concerning psychotropic medications and other health issues as directed by psychiatric provider.
- Ensures standards of quality delivery of medical services and infection control.
- Assists with patient flow and monitors activity in and around the agency facility.
- Coordinates medical care, referrals and patient appointments.
- Monitors patient medications, including any prescription or over the counter medications and methadone take-home medications.
